Joker’s Origin Movie: Do we really need one?

In 2008, we got The Dark Knight and perhaps the best portrayal of Joker ever. Then Suicide Squad came and we got Jared Leto’s portrayal of a crazy gangster who happened to have green coloured hair and laughed maniacally (I refused to accept that it was the Joker). And now, there’s a Joker’s Origin movie in talks. And it isn’t going to be your regular comic book movie either, it’s going to be directed by Todd Phillips (Director of The Hangover series). Rumour has it that even Scorsese is involved. Yes, the MARTIN SCORSESE. The guy who gave us gems like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and so many others (it would take an entire day to write about ALL of his awesome movies).

Now THAT peaks my interest. If someone like Scorsese is involved in a comic book movie project, there must be something in it. He is the big daddy of awesome Hollywood movies and for him to involve in such a project, there must be a strong reason. But the important question is, do we really need an origin movie for the Joker?

See Joker is not a simple character. He’s complex, he’s insane, he’s the friggin clown prince of Gotham! He’s Joker, Batman’s arch nemesis, the Yin to his Yang. Getting his complexity and insanity right on screen is no easy job. But Phillips can pull this job if Scorsese’s guiding him. Although people are not yet over the disappointment of Suicide Squad but perhaps a new Joker is what they need. But... and this is a big but (no pun intended), Joker’s origin story has never been made clear in the comics by DC. How are they supposed to make a movie on something which does not have a clear source? DC never confirmed any of Joker’s origin story as the ‘one’. In some he is failed comedian who fell into some chemicals, in some he was clinically insane. Even Red Hood was the Joker at some point. So the question remains...how? How are they going to make an origin movie of a villain who does not have an origin? Well, we’ll have to wait and watch.
